Spinal Deformity
This includes diagnoses such as scoliosis or kyphosis. The condition can occur in children, adolescents or adults and is generally due to congenital causes in the young or related to the ageing process in the elderly. It refers to an architectural abnormality of the spine producing a twist or a curve. These abnormalities can be very complex and difficult to treat.
We do not surgically treat complex deformities and would limit our activities in the adult to non-operative pain control. Children will be referred to an expert scoliosis surgeon if there is any requirement for treatment. These surgeons can be found in Southampton or London.
More minor deformities such as spondylolisthesis, or stress fracture, are referred to in the appropriate section of the web site. High grade spondylolisthesis, grade 3 or 4, would be referred to the appropriate specialist should surgery be contemplated.
If there is ANY doubt about the correct surgical management a second opinion will be obtained. We are happy to refer on at any stage.
